Albie Nieves, a Belleville resident, has launched a fundraiser to help him obtain the dog. As of Thursday, August 17, more than $5,700 has been raised. Nieves is hoping to raise $25,000 to pay for the cost of the dog.

"I really need this dog for my independence and confidence in life," said the 23-year-old Nieves, who was born prematurely.

The dog will help with assistance in social situations and help Nieves maintain balance when he walks and to be there for him when he is dealing with anxiety and depression.

"The service dog will calm me down," Nieves said.  "If I’m in a public situation and I feel anxious or if I’m having an anxiety attack, the service dog will know the points of my body to lay on to calm me down."

Donors expressed their support for Nieves and hope he gets the dog.

"Anyone who knows Al knows he’s the best kid on the planet! Let’s get him this dog," exclaimed one donor.
